Looking out a window from an illuminated room, during the daytime.

Looking out a window from an illuminated room, during the night.

Looking into a window (from outside) to an unilluminated room, during the daytime.

Looking into a window (from outside) to an illuminated room, during the night.

The general answer is that you want your side of the window to be well lit, and the other side dark.

This way the reflected light does not get washed out by the transmitted light from the other side.
