First, there is a term for what Clara did to the tree, it is called "girdling." What girdling does is to cut away the living tissue of the tree that transports material from the roots to the leaves and vice verse. This specific tissue is called cambium and the transport "tubes" are called xylem and phloem.
Since the tree can no longer transport nutrients or water around, it dies.
This is common practice when foresters or naturalists want to kill trees without cutting them down.
