Hyperbole is figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in "I could sleep for a year" or "This book weighs a ton."
Understatement is a statement that is less than complete. For example: You just hit the biggest lottery of all time! A modest understatement would be: "I'm kind of excited."
I have been helping student write interesting and creative narrative stories for over 15 years. Please let me know if you would like to book a session.
