Hello Sandy, I don't know what language your "saying" is in, but if I understand you correctly, you translated it yourself as "the joke became laughter." Sometimes these types of "sayings/adages" will have a similar adage in another language, but sometimes they don't. I can't think of any particular one in English that would convey the same idea. Since "the joke became laughter" would probably not be easily understood by most English speakers, I would recommend that you translate it more directly by stating what it means in common language. Something like:
Everyone laughed at the joke.
People burst out in laughing.
