Alexis de Tocqueville, in his seminal work Democracy in America, identified several aspects of American culture that he believed enabled the nation to integrate equality into a stable form of government. Two key characteristics stand out:
- The Spirit of Religion and Morality: Tocqueville observed that religion played a unique role in American society by fostering a sense of shared morality and civic responsibility, even in a secular government. Unlike in Europe, where religion and politics were often in conflict, Tocqueville found that American religion supported democracy by promoting equality, community involvement, and individual accountability. He noted that this religious foundation encouraged Americans to respect laws, maintain moral boundaries, and recognize the dignity of all individuals, which ultimately helped sustain a stable and equitable political system.
- A Strong Commitment to Local Governance and Civic Participation: Tocqueville admired the emphasis Americans placed on local governance, which empowered individuals to actively participate in decision-making processes and take responsibility for their communities. Through town meetings, local councils, and grassroots efforts, citizens learned to cooperate, solve problems collectively, and practice self-governance. This deep engagement with local democracy, Tocqueville argued, nurtured a culture of equality and prevented the consolidation of excessive power at the national level. It also instilled in individuals a sense of agency and responsibility, which reinforced the principles of equality and accountability in the broader democratic framework.
These two aspects—religion as a moral guide and the robust tradition of local governance—were, in Tocqueville's view, crucial to America's ability to build and sustain a democracy that valued equality while maintaining stability. They created a culture where individual freedom was balanced by collective responsibility and a shared moral compass.
