Hi Emily W
Let x = apples
Let y = oranges
We know apples cost 0.36 and that 5 apples were purchased
We also know that $2.50 at the most was spent on apples and oranges so we have
5x + y <= 2.50
We can substitute the given values for x and set the equation equal to 2.50 to solve for y
5(0.36) + y = 2.50
1.80 + y = 2.50
y = 2.50 - 1.80 = 0.70
Since seventy cents was left over for oranges that is the most that could be spent on oranges
I hope this helps.
