During the early years through college, school, neighborhood proximity, athletic sports, teams, and male bonding activities are driven through things like Little League, scouts, and school activities. Male friendship can kind of fracture when dating and marriage become more important.
Girls usually bond early with pre-school activities, dance lessons, Brownies, and town-sponsored events and activities for girls like swimming. At college girls sometimes find lifelong friendships that take them thru most stages of life.
Marriage, kids, and divorce can either weaken or strengthen friendships for both men and women.
Sporting events, golf, boating, and bars seem to be the primary activity of male friendships in adulthood. And couple's
dinners, cook-outs, and kid activities maintain a friendship when couples have children of similar age.
In retirement years death of a spouse fracture some friendships. Women seek out other women friends for trips and mutual companionship through senior centers and such. Men seem to congregate for breakfast or coffee at the same shop every day and meet up with other men for conversation and fishing or golf.
Some Seniors find companionship in dating and traveling together. And grandchildren take up the time of seniors that live close by. But sadly it can be a lonely time for others that live a more isolated life.
