Another way to look at this is Objective Vs. Subjective findings.
Let's use an example from an abbreviated patient history and physical exam of a woman with Strep Throat.
SUBJECTIVE: You go to meet with a patient and she describes feeling fatigued, sore throat, and neck pain.- these are all subjective complaints/symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: When you examine her, vital signs show an abnormally high heart rate (tachycardia), Fever of 101 F, you see that the back of her throat is red (erythema), tonsils appear enlarged, and have pus on them (tonsilar exudates). and you feel swollen tonsils. these are all objective findings as they are data you gathered and/or measured when you examined the patient. These are the manifestations of the illness.
