At each level of the food chain, a certain amount of energy is lost to the environment as ambient heat (usually about 90%) and the rest is transferred to anything that consumes the organism in question. For example, a primary consumer like a mouse might get 10% of the energy from a plant it ate and the other 90% might be released into the environment. Theoretically, if a lion (an apex predator) ate a large secondary consumer like a wildebeest or a tertiary consumer (another carnivore like a hyena), it would gain the most energy depending on how much it ate and digested.

Is this a multiple choice question or left open-ended? Lions are obligate carnivores that often hunt and consume animals like zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, warthog, crocodiles, snakes, fish, and birds, to name a few.01/12/22
