How can I grow as an artist?

I draw some things ok but others not so well. How can I get better at drawing?

You grow as an artist by first mastering the fundamentals then by tackling your unique weaknesses/challenges. A good understanding of the fundamentals and principles of art is what all professional artist have a working knowledge of. This is how they are able to produce beautiful works of art. So ask yourself the question what do I need to work on? My lines, may shapes etc. and begin working on those things. This is why I focus on the fundamentals with my students. Once mastered the sky is the limit to how far they can improve and they tend to advance quickly with assignments targeted hone to those fundamental skills.

The key to drawing anything well, whether it be human, animal, natural landscape or a man made object is to understand its underlying structure. We start with drawing basic geometric shapes. Then we learn how they relate to the more complex forms that we see in the real world. This is the essence to my classical structural drawing system. It will make the difference in your work that you are seeking.

For sure learning and mastering the fundamentals of drawing will give you tools to succeed, and confidence too, provided you choose the right teacher/ or utilize your teacher wisely for you. But. What does "better" mean to you? Look at art -- lots of art -- and notice what you like and why. There are no rights and wrongs. What you think matters. It's not that hard to get good at the basics; you can do it. The bigger question is what do you want to make? Let that be your guide
