The type of test can be determined by understanding whether your independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV) are discrete or continuous. Discrete variables are typically categories (Yes/No, Red/Blue/Green, etc.) while continuous variables are typically numerical. Then you can follow these guidelines:
- IV Discrete, DV Continuous: T-test (if IV only has 2 categories) or ANOVA. If the DV consists of proportions and IV has only 2 categories, a test of two proportions can work, too.
- IV Continuous, DV Continuous: Regression
- IV Discrete, DV Discrete: Chi-Square
- IV Continuous, DV Discrete: Logistic Regression
