The bonds holding together adjacent nucleotides (phosphodiester bonds) are polar covalent bonds. The phosphate group of one nucleotide is covalently bonded to the deoxyribose sugar of the neighboring nucleotide. The phosphate group is negatively charged, thus making it hydrophilic and polar.
