Why do you think root/stem cells in plants are designed as they are?

Why do you think root/stem cells in plants are designed as they are? When you saw the root and stem structure you should notice they are similar in form. I want to know how this form meets the function of that part of the plant and why it would be different from leaf or root cells.

I believe that roots are designed to maximize surface area, which is a common theme in biology. By maximizing surface area, organisms can more easily transport and take in nutrients of all kinds, whether it's water or phosphorous. The root and stem cells may be similar because they evolved from the same single cell but then changed to take on different functions as plants evolved.
