Any description of bacterial gene expression should include the lac operon, or regulation of the lactose gene in bacteria as a method to detect the appropriate genes to express in varying food source. This issue covers all the important regulatory methods that bacteria use to control gene expression such as repressors, activators, promoters, operators, RNA polymerase, ribosomes, cAMP/CAP site and transcription. All of these important concepts illustrate the complex regulatory mechanism that most bacteria can use to alter their gene transcription depending on their environment. That is how I would frame my introductory essay on bacterial gene expression.
