The mass of an apple is 136 grams. The mass of an orange is 262 grams. What is the total mass, in kilograms, of 7 apples and 4 oranges?

Let x be the sum of apples (mass 136g) and oranges (mass 262g)

7 apples plus 4 oranges = x

We want our answer in kg, so lets write the mass in kg:

136 grams is .136 kg and 262 grams is  .262 kg

7(.136) + .262 = 2 kg

Together they have a mass of 2 kg

1 apple=136 grams

7 apples=7*136=952 grams

1 orange=262 grams

4 oranges=4*262=1048 grams

total mass=952+1048=2000 grams

kilo means "1000"

1 kilogram=1000  grams

2000/1000=2 kilograms is the total mass
