C + B = 32    where C = # number of cupcakes/students for Ms Cowgill   B = # cupcakes/students for Ms Burt.  32 is total number of students/cupcakes.

 

C = B + 10

 

B + (B+10) = 32

 

B + (B+10) = 32

2B+ 10 = 32

2B = 22

B = 11

 

C = B + 10 = 21

 

11 + 21 =  32
