Repartimiento occurred during Colonial Missions of the Spanish in the Southeast region of the the US under De Soto. Repartimiento was forced labor of Native American Indians from late 1500s-1700s as a way for Spain to extract labor for infrastructure, building of settlements, military operations, and service to the officials.
Repartimiento was considered to be a time limited labor draft which was supposed to be different the enconmienda which colonist had full control over the native population. However, repartimiento was often abused, it disrupted Native American way of life, exposed them to disease which caused population declined. Adverse affect on traditional economies, increased violence, forced Christianity and Spanish culture in place of native culture and beliefs.
