A ratio can be set up as a fraction, with the first element on top and the second on bottom.  When they say ration of x to y, it would be x/y.

 

a) ratio of aidan's age to Maria's age is 15/12, which reduces to 5/4.

b) ratio of Maria's age to Aidan's age is 12/15, which reduces to 4/5.

a) Aidan:Maria is 12:15 <=> 4:5  after dividing both by 3 (it doesn't change the ratio to do so)

b) Maria:Aidan is 5:4    the numbers get switched around to represent the right name. That's all.
