One phenomena that could help explain would be when your hands shrivel up if you stay in the pool too long. This effect is caused by osmosis, which is the movement of water from areas of lower solute concentration to higher concentration. Since the pool water has a higher solute concentration than your hand, water from your hand will move into pool water causing your hand to look all shriveled and dry.
