Hierarchical levels of organization include: Atom, Molecule, Organelle, Cell, Tissue, Tissue System, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere. The levels are distinguished by emergent properties. For instance, plant guard cells made up of macromolecules and organelles have a cell membrane potential and turgor. Tissues like the xylem are made up of cells and give structural support. Tissue systems like the plant vascular tissue system offer long distance transport of water and nutrients.
