2. -Dropping the -o off the verb form above
3. Adding the opposite ending, according to the subject.

So, when you were looking for the answer for:

"Es imporante que mi hermana y yo (escribir) ________ una carta."

These are the steps you followed (almost automatically in your head):

1. Escribo
2. Escrib
3. (Subject is "Mi hermana y yo" = "Nosotoros/Nosotras" Escribir is an -IR verb, so you added "amos" to Step 2 above (Escrib). End result? "EscribAMOS" ¡Perfecto!
