Darwin’s theory of sexual selection is a mechanism of natural selection. Members of one sex choose members of the opposite sex to mate based on physical attributes (brighter color, bigger size, bigger horns, etc). It also includes members of the same sex competing with each other for access to mates.

Sexual selection is the process by which some mates become more desirable based on particular traits. Intersexual selection is when females choose which male to mate with. Intrasexual selection is when males compete for access to females. Dances, calls/songs, and coloration can all be factors in mate choice. Both types of sexual selection can result in sexual dimorphism - or a difference in the appearance of males and females - such that males possess a trait to attract females or compete with other males even if it limits his own survival.
