The plasma membrane, also known as the phospholipid bilayer, is one of the four common features of all cells- eukaryotic and prokaryotic alike. This membrane is an outer layer, or barrier, that decides what can come into the cell (or an organelle!) and what can leave it. Because of this trait, it is known as selectively permeable. For example, O2 can freely travel across the membrane, while macromolecules and ions cannot. Both the production of the membrane and the performance of all of its parts are crucial to the survival of the cell.
