Prior to Henry VIII, the church did not allow for divorce. In fact, kings resulted to beheading their wives in order to get out of the marriage. However, when Henry the VIII first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was not able to produce a male heir, he decided he would reform the church so that he could divorce her instead of hill her. So, his main goal was so that he could divorce; it was not for financial reasons.
