• A peanut company wants to mix 20 pounds of peanuts worth $3 a pound with cashews worth $5 a pound in order to make a mix worth $3.50. How many pounds of cashews should be added to the peanuts?

This is a system of equations where there are x pounds of peanuts and y pounds of cashews.

 

x+y=20

3x+5y=3.5(20)=70

 

Multiply top equation by -3:

-3x-3y=-60

 

Add to second equation:

2y=10

 

y=5 and x=15

 

Checking our work:

3(15)+5(5)=70
