A deep passion for all things biology, especially microbiology.
This is a complex question that is still not fully understood. There are elements of viruses that make certain viruses more prone to specie jumps, such as viruses that are genetically made up of RNA which are prone to more mutations. Generally when a virus interacts with a new species and this infection is stable, it would facilitate emergence in this new species. Usually when a virus makes a species jump it encounters a dead end host, and they are only successful when they can sustain transmission in the new species. Specie jumps can be created by botttlekneck events or viral emergence.
