Nonenveloped- The capsids are NOT covered by an envelope. Nonenveloped viruses are composed of capsids (protein) and nucleic acid (DNA or RNA). Capsids protect viruses from nuclease enzymes in biological fluids and promotes the viruses attachment to susceptible host cells. The capsid is made of capsomeres.
Enveloped- On enveloped viruses, sometimes (but not always) spikes are present on the surface of the virus. The envelope (lipid bilayer) covers the capsid. The envelope consists of lipids, proteins, and carbs.
