Good Afternoon Erika,
Q:We can have a strong sense of Integrity "wholeness" if we have accomplished Generativity (rather than Stagnation)..why?
I believe in helping students obtain an answer versus giving the answer outright.
If I am reading your post correctly, in order to answer the questions you must first identify and define Ericksons definitions of generativity , stagnation. and integrity. Generativity vs Stagnation is the 7th of the 8th stages of Ericksons psychosocial development theory the first being proactive and willing to basically do whatever necessary to ensure the well being and survival of future generations. For example but not limited too, parents who have a trust or have set up stocks etc , for their children, grandchildren, so they know they will have ensured some type of financial security. The feeling of being a part of that is a motivation for people to be engaged. What is better for the whole just not the self, however the feeling of accomplishment is the reward, being included, feeling productive, pride in knowing one has made a difference. When we feel this way we are more than likely to repeat the behavior. This is includes contributing to society as a whole to make it better for future generations etc. Stagnation on the other hand is failing to contribute, being self centered, unwillingness to become engaged, the self is more important. So therefore if we have accomplished generativity, then easy to achieve integrity, looking on ones life with a sense of accomplishment due to generativity, the knowing that what you have accomplished, participated in, fullfillment without regret.
