Slavery. The south had a largely rural economy, so the biggest "industries" down there were massive plantations: farms between 500-1,000 acres that sold cash crops such as cotton or tobacco. And instead of hiring many hands to work all that land. The slave trade was brought to the Americas in the 17th century. The south today will claim that it was over states' rights. Though the only right of the states that was threatened, was the right to own slaves.
