The Missouri Compromise of 1820 actually made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. This was to maintain the balance of power in congress. Additionally, the Missouri Compromise banned slavery from the remaining Louisiana Purchase lands located north of the 36º 30' parallel (part of the boundary between Tennessee and Kentucky).
