The cell membrane controls the movement of molecules in and out of the cell. Also called the plasma membrane, the cell membrane can engage in either passive or active transport. Active transport requires energy; passive transport does not. Molecules travel (or are pushed, in the case of active transport) through funnel-like channels in the membrane.
