This gland is part of the body's endocrine system. The endocrine system is a collection of various glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood.

The thyroid gland and parathyroid glands are endocrine organs responsible for regulating metabolic processes, body temperature, weight, and blood calcium levels. The parathyroid glands produce parathyroid hormone (PTH) which increases blood calcium levels by stimulating the release of calcium from bone. The thyroid gland produces calcitonin which opposes the action of PTH by lowering blood calcium levels and retaining bone. The thyroid gland also produces the hormones T3 and T4, which are responsible for regulating metabolism, temperature, heart rate, some aspects of mood, and weight/appetite.
