Hi Mandy.
What would you like the "x" in each of those to represent. I could be the number of pencils, or the number of dogs or the number of purple Easter eggs or.... You should find something to use that you are familiar with and can be numbered, like 12 eggs or 5 peanuts.
Every EQUAL SIGN (=) becomes the word IS or WILL BE in a sentence. 1.5x is a multiplication of 1.5 and x, and 1.5 is one and one-half in a sentence. Multiplication is "times". Since we cannot have half of a dog, should probably not use anything living in your word problem. How about letting x = the number of cookies that Billy eats.
So the first expression: 1.5x = 6 becomes something like:
I plan to eat one and one-half times the number of cookies that Billy eats, and that will be 6 cookies.
(if you were to solve this, you would see that x = 4, and it means that Billy eats 4 cookies, and you eat 1.5 * 4 = 6 cookies)
Usually if there is addition we use words like "more than" or "add" or "additional". So the second expression 3/4 + x = 2
Three-fourths added to the number of cookies that Billy eats is two.
(notice this time the "=" becomes the word "IS" and the "+" becomes "added to")
Hope this helps.
