tickets to a basketball game and i forgot the equation to use.

I asked my professor for help but he has a very thick accent so I didn't quite catch most of what he said.  Can you guys please help?

 

 

309 tickets were sold for a basketball game. The activity cardholder's tickets cost $1.50 each and the non-cardholders' cost $2.00. The total amount collected was $554.50.  How many of each ticket were sold?

Let x = the number of tickets sold at $1050 each, and y = the number of tickets sold at $2.00 each

 

The given information tells us that x + y = 309 tickets

From this equation, we solve for x, and the result is x = 309 - y

 

We also know that $1.50x + $2.00y = $554.50

 

When we substitute the value for x from the first equation, we get $1.50(309 - y) + $2.00y = $554.50

$463.50 - $1.50y + $2.00y = $554.50;   - $1.50y + $2.00y = $554.50 - $463.50; 0.5y = $91 y = 182 tickets

 

From the first equation, we see that x + 182 = 309t; so x = 127 tickets

 

Thus, $1.50(127) + $2.00(182) = $554.50; $554.50 = $554.50
