Velocity v. Time Calculations

In order to calculate the total distance traveled (sometimes is the same as net displacement) from a velocity v. time graph, we find the total area under the line. Divide the area into triangles and rectangles and add the areas.

Area =12base height      Area ▭=length width

Practice:

  1. If the graph above was a car traveling from home to school, what would be the total distance traveled from 0 to 10 seconds? Show your work.

  1. What would be the distance traveled from 0 to 4 seconds?
