Let D be Dimes
Let P be Penies
Each Penny is $0.01 and each Dime is $0.10. Adding all Pennies and Dimes he has $9.84, so:
0.01P + 0.10D = 9.84
He has 4 times as many Dimes as Pennies, so:
D = 4P
System of equation:
0.01P + 0.10D = 9.84
D = 4P
Replacing D = 4P in the first equation:
0.01P + 0.10 (4P) = 9.84
Solve for P:
0.01P + 0.40P = 9.84
0.41P = 9.84
P = 9.84 / 0.41
P = 24
Replacing P in the second equation:
D = 4P
D = 4 (24)
D = 96
Mr. Davis has 24 Pennies and 96 Dimes.
