Lisa - we'll have to assume the return trip was the same distance (route).
Let's assume a distance. I'll choose 15 miles one way, or 30 miles round trip. I calculated the required time each way (divide the distance by the speed). I then added the times and divided by the total distance to give an average speed of 17.1 mph. It makes no difference what we choose for distance - the average speed will be 12.1 mph.
