A phylogeny shows the correlations between a certain group of organisms, or how one leads to a bunch of others over time with the development of certain characteristics. Sister taxa are two organisms with a direct common ancestor. A basal taxon is an organism that evolved early but never branches out. It would be connect to the earliest ancestor of the phylogeny. Monophyletic taxa is defined as one that includes the most recent common ancestor of a group of organisms, and all of its descendents. Polyphyletic taxons are defined as ones that do not include the common ancestor of all members of the taxon. Paraphyletic refers to the organisms in a single group descending from a common ancestor and is correlated to the most original ancestor of the phylogeny. Polytomy is when a species, regardless of when or where it indicates to originate from in the phylogeny, directly divides into multiple species.
