King Henry VIII largely separated from the Catholic Church because he wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, as she bore him no male heirs to secure the throne of England. In addition, he also did so in order to marry Anne Boleyn but since the Catholic Church forbade divorce he took matters into his own hands. It was also a power gain for him as the Pope was seen as an incredibly powerful figure and dominant in European politics at the time Henry wanted to show that he didn't need to obey the Pope and that he was just as powerful if not more so and he did that by installing the Church of England with himself at its head.
