Quotient is the answer to a division problem.
x/4 - 5 = -12
So to begin it says 5 less than which we can represent as minus 5, but 5 less than what? 5 less than the quotient, which is the answer to the division problem. Than they say that it is the quotient of a number which we can use a variable (x) & 4 which can be represented as x/4. Now combining the above we can get x/4 - 5 (We put -5 after the division because it says 5 LESS THAN THE QUOTIENT). Finally the last part says this is all = to -12 so we can get get the final equation x/4 - 5 = -12.
