In natural ecosystems, the gas exchange between the atmosphere and the biosphere is generally balanced over time. In photosynthesis, carbon dioxide (CO2) is taken in and converted into organic carbon compounds, while in cellular respiration, organic carbon compounds are broken down to release CO2 back into the atmosphere. This cycle maintains a relatively stable balance of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. However, human activities such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels can disrupt this balance, leading to an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels and contributing to climate change.
