Hi Sami, the autonomic nervous system (essentially, the part of the nervous system not under direct conscious control) can be divided up into two major control systems/circuits. These are called the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic system is colloquially referred to sometimes as "flight or fight response"; it tends to activate the body in stressful/dangerous situations by doing things like dilating the pupils, slowing down digestion, raising heart rate, etc. The parasympathetic nervous system works antagonistically to the sympathetic nervous system, functionally preparing the body in safe situations for things like eating/digestion, reproduction, etc.
I understand "functional effects" in your question to mean the things the system does to the body when activated, like dilating pupils and increasing heart rate. You should be able to search the functions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems for a more complete list. Hope this was helpful!
