Hi Lyka!
Enzymes reduce the amount of activation energy needed for the reaction to begin. Most enzymes are proteins that affect just one specific substance, which is called the enzyme's substrate.
Enzymes generally lower activation energy by reducing the energy needed for reactants to come together and react. If you were to compare the activation energy with and without the enzyme, you would notice that the activation energy is often substantially lower when the necessary enzyme is present.
In real life, there are numerous chemical reactions occurring within our bodies on a regular basis. Many of these reactions are only with the presence of the correct enzyme. A lack of the proper enzymes may and often causes disorders/defects to occur in humans. This is why there are many inherited metabolic disorders in humans. In fact, most of them are caused by a single defective or missing enzyme.
