mixed venous oxygen content?

What is the mixed venous oxygen content?

The following blood gas data for a 27 y/o female are obtained:

FI02 =                                  .21

Spont. breathing=              f = 12

Hgb =                                  14

pH =                                    7.47

PaC02 =                               30 torr

Pa02 =                                  97 torr

HC03 =                                24 meq/l

O2 sat =                               98%

Hello Chaz P, Short answer torr = mmhg, if the gas is from a Pulmonary artery catheter the mixed venous oxygen content is 30 mmhg. Longer answer: the mixed venous oxygen content can only be directly measured by a swan catheter that is in the pulmonary artery in the non-wedged position. This is because blood drawn from a central line or peripherally generally has a higher oxygen content then the pulmonary artery. This is due to the heart having a higher oxygen consumption ratio then then the rest of the body. Once the heart extracts oxygen from blood, this deoxygenated blood is drained into the right side of the heart, mixing with the blood from the inferior and superior vena cava and lowering its oxygen content.
