Have you ever given an assignment that explains literary terms and then had your student write an example?

It's always helpful when learning literary genres to not only define them but to also show examples, and not to stop there. Have you ever had your student try to write a an example of the given genre? A blank verse, a haiku, a limerick, even a folk tale ?

I am never surprised, just delighted at the way some students come up with wonderful examples of literary styles in a flash.

In a moment's time I have seen students write free verse, limericks, and rhyme schemes.

Take for example this wonderful verse in aa-bb-aa-b rhyme, done in a few minutes:

I have finals this whole week

there is so much to do and hardly any time to speak

We have so much to study

and some people I know might need a buddy

I'm tired of school, can we please just play hide and seek.
