A downward-moving skydiver, who has just opened the parachute, is slowing down.

The mass of the skydiver is 87 kg.

The air resistance force is 1156 N.

What is the net force, and in which direction?

What is the acceleration of the skydiver while slowing down?

Force downwards = mg = 9.81 x 87 = 853.47 N

Force upwards = 1156 N

Net force = 1156 - 853.47 = 302.53 N upwards

So acceleration of skydiver = - (302.53 / 87) = -3.48 m/s²

So downward speed is decreasing at 3.48 m/s²
