Math in plain English
Imagine this slab of travertine that stands 8 centimeters tall. The sides of the top and bottom of the slab measure 76 centimeters each.
To find the total surface area, you must find the area of each side and add these 6 areas together.
The area of the top of the slab, which is a square, (length x width) is found by
76 centimeters x 76 centimeters - 5,776 centimeters2.
The bottom of the slab would also have a surface area of 5,776 centimeters2.
Each of the four remaining sides, front, back, right and left, measure 76 centimeters by 8 centimeters.
The surface area of each side is found by
76 centimeters x 8 centimeters - 608 centimeters2.
Therefore, 2(5,776 centimeters2) + 4(608 centimeters2) =
11,552 centimeters2 + 2432 centimeters2 = 13,984 centimeters2.
