Math in plain English
Remember the area of a rectangle is found by multiplying the length times the width
So, imagine this slab. It is the shape of a box that is 16 meters tall. The top of the box measures 12 meters by 2 meters, therefore the bottom of the box will measure this also.
One side of the box (the front) would measure 16 meters by 2 meters, as would the opposite side (back side).
The 2 remaining sides (right side and left side) would measure 16 meters by 12 meters each.
The area of the top of the slab would be found by 12 meters x 2 meters = 24 meters2.
The bottom of the slab would also have an area of 24 meters2.
The area of the front side of the slab would be found by 16 meters x 2 meters = 32 meters2.
The back side of the slab would also have an area of 32 meters2.
The area of the right side of the slab would be found by 16 meters x 12 meters = 192 meters2.
The left side of the slab would also have an area of 192 meters2.
To find the total area of the slab, you must add the area of the six sides together.
24 meters2 + 24 meters2 + 32 meters2 + 32 meters2 + 192 meters 2 + 192 meters2 = 496 meters2.
