The organelle more generally characterized as a cell's control center is the nucleus. This is because the nucleus contains all of the genetic information to manufacture proteins and to control its growth, metabolism and reproduction. In plant and animal cells, nuclei are housed within the cell's cytoplasm along with all of the other organelles. The cytoplasm helps to maintain a cell's shape. It also provides support for the cell's internal structures and acts as a suspension medium for organelles.
