An example can include sodium ions Na+ ions that are highly concentrated outside of the cell and cannot pass through the nonpolar lipid bilayer of the membrane.
Another example is water and it can move freely across the cell membrane of all cells either through protein channels or sliding in between the membrane itself and this could happen through osmosis which refers to the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane.
